Welcome Back to On Cannon Green
After a one year hiatus I am glad to say, the Internet’s first, and only, fan site covering West Florida Argonauts football is back. For anyone finding the site for the first time, I started On Cannon Green back in the late summer of 2021, I really wanted an outlet to talk about that team and it just kind of made sense to blog about it. UWF won the D2 national championship in December 2019, then lost a whole year of momentum to the canceled 2020 season. It felt like there was a ton to talk about, the roster had really changed a lot and despite brining back a lot of the pieces from the title run, there were going to be a lot of new faces at big spots.
Fast forward to Spring Football 2023, and I feel like there is a similar level of anticipation for this year’s squad. The most intriguing angle is there will be, for the first time since 2015, a brand new coaching staff on the sidelines in Pensacola. After a terrific run Head Coach Pete Shinnick, and a lot of his staff, have moved on to Towson and in steps a very familiar face. In December UWF announced former Argonauts starting QB and assistant coach Kaleb Nobles would be taking over as the program’s second Head Coach. Like that 2021 team though, despite the massive changes from the previous season, the Argos being back a ton of familiar faces from a team that made it all the way back to the final four in 2022. Standouts on both sides of the ball return to try and build off that deep playoff run, QB Peewee Jarrett, LBs Will Breland and Willie Jordan, offensive playmakers Shomari Mason, Caden Leggett, and CJ Wilson, and CB Anthony Johnson Jr will lead a deep and talented roster onto the field this fall.
Like back in ‘21 I’ll be starting with previews of the team, looking at major spots of turnover, talking about top players and position groups, who will be replacing key pieces from 2022, breakout players and newcomers to watch for, asking some big questions about the team going into camp, and maybe talking a bit about scheme changes and the new coaching staff. When the seasons starts my intention is to post at least twice a week. First, a preview article every Friday outlining the opponent’s game results and statistical performance so far for the season, strengths and weaknesses, top players, and matchups to watch. There will also be a recap article on Tuesday after I’m able to rewatch the game, touching on top performances, key trends, and important stats. I may squeeze in an instant reaction on Saturday night or Sunday morning, giving just a few thoughts on the outcome and what I saw live, especially if there is something really worth talking about. If I can figure it out, instant reaction might end up being a short podcast instead of a blog post.
Looking back I really regretted not writing last fall, it was such a fun season and that team was awesome to watch week in and week out, but life gets in the way sometimes. My aim is to make up for it this fall, and hopefully shine some more light on a great team and program in an exciting transition season. Hopefully we have just as much fun this fall and I’ll be here giving my takes on the season all along the way. Go Argos!
