Welcome to On Cannon Green

Greetings fellow Argos and welcome to On Cannon Green, the Internet’s first and only fan site dedicated to covering the University of West Florida Argonauts Football Team. This site’s origins go back almost 15 years now, when in 2007 I attended freshman orientation at the University of West Florida. Like most Argos who came before us, one of the dreams the university pitched to us was a future with a football team, the infamous “four year plan”. As a former (mediocre) high school football player and rabid fanatic of all things college football, the promise of a future with a football team was almost unbelievable. As it turned out, at least for my tenure at UWF, which ended in the spring of 2011, it was unbelievable. However, by the fall of that same year, then university President Judy Bense announced that a feasibility committee had made a positive recommendation for UWF to pursue an intercollegiate football program.

By the time the announcement was made I had continued my journey away from Pensacola, but from a distance I did everything I could to follow every announcement, uniform reveal, and coaching hire. In the spring of 2015, I was living on the west coast, working my first real job and furiously researching Head Coach Pete Shinnick’s initial signing class. That fall I watched every video clip and interview I could find covering the fledgling program, culminating in watching the first ever live streamed intrasquad scrimmage.

All this before the first varsity games were ever announced. Did I mention I was fanatical?

Then came Fall 2016: Real football. From the 45-0 drubbing of Ave Maria in 2016 to the oh-so-close National Championship Game in 2017 to glorious redemption in 2019, I’ve watched and rewatched every game that has been broadcast, which has amazingly been almost all of them.

What is On Cannon Green going to be? For now, just a blog where I’ll share my thoughts, recaps, and projections for our Argos. Maybe one day it’ll be more, but as a father of two toddlers I’m going to start off slow and see what happens. One thing that I intend to be staples of this site will be pre-game previews/post-game reviews. I’d like to try to give Argos fans across the internet not only an idea of how UWF is looking, but how it factors into the Gulf South Conference and Division II Football landscape as a whole. From December through February I’ll also profile the Argo’s recruiting efforts, which as a D2 program aren’t covered very widely, to provide a glimpse into the future.

I am really excited about this project and I hope that my passion for UWF Football reaches others who feel the same way.

Go Argos!
