Week 4 Recap: Back on the Winning Track, Argos Top Wolves 49-21

Notes from Rewatch

  • Argos went 3 and out on the opening drive of the game, didn’t have another 3 and out with the 1st team offense.

  • No Will Breland, Willie Jordan, Kode Lowe, or Aiden Swett in this one. We still haven’t seen Jordan or Lowe this season.

  • UWF is still comfortably rotating at least six defensive linemen, even without Swett or Georell Kidd.

  • After the first drive the DL took over, ended up with 9.5 total pressures (sacks+hurries) on 42 pass rush snaps

  • 62 yards allowed on first drive, just 83 yards on next eight drives.

  • Defensive End Byron Puryear flashed didn’t get a sack but his pass rush was disruptive, and he bullied the Wolves’ Tackles.

  • McMullen was a force once again, he’s currently leading the GSC in sacks with 6, Demitris Swilley of Delta State is 2nd with 2.5

  • Argos tried a different starting Safety combo with Quincy Milhomme and Donovan Barnes.

  • Starting Center Nash Nelson did not play, the Argos starting OL left to right was Bruce Beesley Stipe Doucoure Freeman.

  • Offensive Line really bounced back after the FAMU game, allowing just one pressure against Peewee.

  • Walker Robinson looked great filling in, the Linebacker depth has helped the Argos weather some huge absences.

  • Jamontez Woods is fun to watch, he provides a nice pass catching outlet from the backfield and he runs tough.

  • John Jiles is insane, he’s a mismatch for everyone. Hurdled another DB. Came inches away from 3 TD. Good after the catch.

  • Deep shots had more of a presence, this was the most opened up the offense has been all season.

  • The first TD pass to Leggett was a play call, but Leggett made a nice jumping play to avoid a hit and score.

UWF Players of the Week

Offense: WR John Jiles (8 catches 175 yards 2 TD)

What else can you say buy wow? John Jiles lead all GSC WRs this weekend and made multiple eyepopping plays. An intermediate throw where he shakes a defender to gain nice YAC. Bombs down the sideline. A TD catch in the endzone where he double clutched but kept his feet inbounds. Hurdling defenders. Jiles is playing like a man possessed, and currently leads the GSC in receiving yards and TDs.

Defense: LB Walker Robinson (6 Tackles 4 Solo 1.5 TFL 0.5 Sacks 1 PBU 1 QB hurry)

Robinson got his first start as an Argonaut with Will Breland out and a little shifting of the LB group as a result. He didn’t disappoint, finishing the night with a team high 6 tackles, team high 1.5 TFL, he shared a sack with Deshawn Wilson, broke up a pass, and was credited with one hurry. In short, the Sophomore LB was all over the field.

Special Teams: P Griffin Cerra (7/7 PATs)

Hard one to pick out, because the special teams didn’t have to do too much, but Cerra got plenty of work on extra points Saturday night. In four games he is 18/18 on PATs and 1/1 on FG attempts

Coming up This Week

UWF is on the road to Tigerville, SC as GSC play really starts to heat up. North Greenville is lead by a young but up and coming GSC QB in Dylan Ramirez, and has two of the top 10 pass catchers in the conference (Dre’ Williams 1st, Cameron Walker 6th). The Argonauts have dominated this short rivalry, four wins to no losses, since the Crusaders joined the GSC in 2018, however, a few of them have been way too close for comfort. This includes last year’s 34-31 win in Pensacola, which saw the Argos claw back from a 13 point deficit in the 4th quarter.
