Week 1 Recap: Argos Win 35-3 vs KWC

Notes from Rewatch

  • Both offense and defense showed substantial evolutions from the “traditional” UWF schemes.

  • Offense played mostly 11 personnel (1 TE 1 RB 3 WR), with an attached TE. Sometimes TE flexed out into slot, sometimes TE subbed for fourth WR (10 personnel).

  • Lots of 3x1 with TE trips and a single WR isolated, saw a lot of bunched trips sets.

  • Very vanilla offensively, only a couple shots downfield, pass game was more about spacing and timing and letting playmakers work. Peewee looked effective in the offense.

  • New WR group looks good, Franklin and Jiles are going to be fun. Jiles surprisingly nimble for his size. Zac Offord had a very nice game.

  • Defensively they lined up almost exclusively in a 4-2-5 look, with Rover OLB/Slot Safety and four down linemen.

  • No Willie Jordan or Kode Lowe, Gael Laurent and Ralph Ortiz playing in their stead.

  • Deep DL rotation, I counted 11 players in the first half alone. McMullen and Dorn both played outside and inside, especially on passing downs.

  • Similarly basic on defense, mostly four man rush, but it was all that was needed. Showed blitz a lot but didn’t blitz much, could be setting up some simulated pressures.

  • DB group heavily featured a True Freshman Donovan “DJ” Barnes, couldn’t tell if he started but he played a lot with the first team throughout the game.

  • Byron Puryear’s sack was a really nice pass rush move, that is what he was brought in for.

  • LB/S alignment was kind of weird, Mike backer was really deep and Safeties were really shallow, but probably because of the option look that KWC gave.

  • Amari Mitchell has nice range and physicality for his size, had a solid opener.

  • Argonauts scored TD on 5 of 7 drives with the first team, threw a pick in the endzone and had a last second TD called back, game could have easily been 49-3. No three and outs.

  • Defense gave up only a handful of plays over 10 yards, forced two turnovers, and had two sacks.

UWF Players of the Week

Offense: Peewee Jarrett (19-22 230 yards 1 TD 0 INT, 5 carries 18 yards 2 TD)

Peewee was efficient in his return to action, his 3 incompletions were a miscommunication, a drop, and an interception that was called back on a penalty, which shouldn’t have counted.

Defense: John McMullen (4 tackles (4 solo) 3.0 TFL 1.0 sack 1 forced fumble)

McMullen showed why he was an All-GLIAC selection last year, he was a complete force on the line playing inside and outside. He tallied a sack and forced fumble on the first drive, which really set the tone for the rest of the game.

Special Teams: Virgil Lemons (1 punt return 28 yards)

Lemons had a really nice punt return, he also had at least one tackle on coverage teams. On defense he added an INT in his first action with the Argos.

Coming up This Week

UWF hits the road for the first time this season to take on McKendree in Lebanon, Illinois. The Bearcats had a rough Week 1 opener against Tiffin (D2, GMAC) falling on the road 79-14. McKendree will be lead offensively Yogi Flagler Jr., a potential D2 All-American Wide Receiver, who was one of the bright spots for the losing side finishing with 8 receptions 65 yards and 2 TD. Defensively they were lead by Elijah Feltons 9 tackles and a sack from Zion Rodriguez. McKendree will definitely be looking to bounce back in their home opener.
