Notable Week 3 Results

Taking a look at how UWF’s 2021 opponents faired in week 3.

Thursday September 16th

North American 0 West Alabama 80

West Alabama blew out North American on Thursday night. The Tigers moved to 3-0 on the season with the win. McDaniels had another solid game with 232 yards passing and 3 TDs but the running game was dominating on the night. UWA pounded the stallions for more than 300 yards and 6 TD on the ground, lead by Demetrius Battle with 10 carries 170 yards 3 TDs, while leading rusher James Smith III added 57 yards and 2 TDs on 11 carries. The defense added 4 sacks and 6 TFL to 3 fumble recoveries and 1 INT, holding NAU to just 213 yards while playing a ton of backups throughout the game. West opens GSC play this weekend at MC (1-2).

Saturday September 18th

Ft Lauderdale 0 Mississippi College 63

The Choctaws get in the win column week 3 with a 63-0 drubbing of Ft Lauderdale. MC (1-1) came out the gate hot, getting a 35-0 lead in the 1st quarter. Mississippi College attempted only 2 passes, and unsurprisingly the running game lead the way with 351 yards and 8 TD, averaging 8.4 yards per carry. Grant Collins topped the century mark and had a 61 yard long. The Choctaws’ defense held the Eagles to just 6 first downs and 70 yards of offense on 49 plays. Ft Lauderdale (0-2) will travel to Pensacola this weekend to face UWF (3-0), while the Mississippi College will host UWA (3-0).

#22/NR Delta State 26 #18/20 UWG 27

The biggest game of the week for the GSC was a ranked battle between undefeateds Delta State and West Georgia. The Wolves significantly outgained the Statesmen (394-260) but the game came down to a failed 2 point attempt and a missed PAT following DSU TDs in the 2nd half. West Georgia lost the turnover battle 3-1, and Harrison Frost threw a go-ahead pick 6 in the 4th quarter. Delta was lead on offense once again by Shegog who had 110 passing and 71 rushing, and on defense was all over UWG’s backfield with 9 TFL. The Wolves did throw for 292 yards and WR Dechane Slade was solid with 6 receptions 95 yards. DSU (2-1) travels to FCS Jackson State (2-1) this weekend, while the Wolves (3-0) travel to Rome to face Shorter (2-1).

North Greenville 13 Citadel 45

In an in state battle between D2 NGU and FCS Citadel, the Crusaders (2-1) were just overmatched, scoring their only TD (a 100 yard kickoff return) with just over 5 minutes to play in the game. Starting QB Kaelen Riley went 13-32 173 yards 0 TD 1 INT, while the running game couldn’t quite top 100 yards. On defense NGU gave up over 350 yards rushing and 5 TDs as well as 135 yards passing on just 4 attempts, and 1 TD. The Crusaders look to bounce back this weekend with their fourth South Carolina game in four weeks, taking on Eskrine (0-3) on the road.

Shorter 38 Clark Atlanta 17

Shorter made the trip up to Atlanta from Rome and were able to come home with a victory over the Panthers (1-2). The Hawks (2-1) were extremely balanced on offense with 238 yards through the air and 262 yards on the ground, for a total of 500 yards on 7.4 yards per play. On defense they crushed Clark, with 9 TFL and 2 sacks, while holding the Panthers to 313 yards of offense. Shorter jumped on the home team taking a 28-3 lead into halftime. The Hawks Aenaes Dennis had 3 TDs through the air, connecting with top target Dorian Anderson 5 times for 78 yards and 1 TD. They also boasted 2 100 yard rushers, Jaiden Dollard (142 yards 1 TD) and Tyrell Owens (102 yards 1 TD). Shorter will host in state and GSC rival UWG (3-0) this weekend in a big test for the Hawks, who are looking to get over the hump in the GSC in ‘21.

Albany State 3 #4/3 Valdosta State 21

In a game a lot closer than people imagined, Albany State (2-1) was unable to secure the upset after a long weather delay pushed the game late into the night. Valdosta State (3-0) got a career high passing night from Ivory Durham, who had 207 yards and 3 TDs along with 42 yards rushing. It was really the defense that cemented the game for the Blazers, forcing 4 turnovers and sacking Albany State’s QB Dionte Bonneau 5 times. The Blazers allowed just 213 yards of offense and pitched a shutout in the second half. VSU will look to stay undefeated next weekend against Shorter (2-1) as they open GSC play for the 2021 season.
