Taking a look at how UWF’s 2021 opponents faired in week 2.

Saturday September 11th

Midwestern State 31 #7/#5 TAMU-Commerce 30

For the second week in a row Commerce hasn’t looked the same without QB Miklo Smalls. The Lions outgained Midwestern State 416-283 but turned the ball over 3 times in plus territory and settled for a FG in the redzone. On defense Elijah Earles continues his strong start with a 2.5 sack performance. The Lions host the Argonauts (2-0) next week in a highly anticipated non-conference game.

McKendree 17 Delta State 45

The Statesmen continue to light up the scoreboard with a balanced offensive attack, piling up 201 yards rushing and 276 yards passing and scoring 38 unanswered points after falling behind 17-7. DSU was their own worst enemy though, committing 4 turnovers (3 fumbles 1 INT). QB Patrick Shegog had his second excellent outing leading the team in rushing with 88 yards and 2 TD on 10 attempts, while throwing for 272 yards 3 TD 1 INTs, completing 48% of his passes. The schedule stiffens significantly next week as Delta travels to Carrollton to take on a top 25 UWG (2-0) team.

North Greenville 24 Newberry 14

North Greenville stays undefeated in non-conference play with a win over in state rival Newberry. A defensive game that saw almost all of the scoring happen in the first half, NGU ran for 98 yards and passed for 295 and 3 TD, thanks to Kealan Riley. Riley, who did throw 1 INT, was otherwise efficient on the night, completing 68% and averaging 7.7 yards per attempt. North Greenville’s defense allowed only 312 yards and shut out Newberry in the second half. Senior DB RJ Wooten lead the way with 7 tackles (6 solo) and a TFL. Next week the Crusaders hit the road against FCS Citadel.

Morehouse 0 #24/#22 UWG 47

West Georgia followed up their week 1 upset of Carson-Newman by demolishing Morehouse. The Wolves had almost 550 yards of offense (229 rushing 318 passing) and only allowed 122 yards on 44 plays. Harrison Frost completed 60% of his passes for 273 yards and 2 TDs with a trio of RBs with 55 yards or more and averaging at least 5.9 yards per carry. Next week the Wolves open GSC play against Delta State (2-0) at home.

Shorter 12 Albany State 28

After a week 1 win against Brevard, Shorter came up short against Albany State. The Rams, now 2-0 against the GSC this season, outgained the Hawks 435-245. Albany State sacked QB Aeneas Dennis 4 times and picked him off 3 times. Offensively, the Rams gained 157 yards on the ground and 278 yards through the air. Shorter will face another SIAC opponent at Clark Atlanta (1-1) next weekend.

West Alabama 33 Tuskegee 7

James Smith III lead the way for UWA racking up 134 yards and 1 TD, while QB Jack McDaniels added 294 yards through the air and a TD. The offense moved the ball but did settle for 4 FG attempts from inside the 30 yard line (3/4), and the OL allowed 4 sacks. On Defense the Tigers matched with 4.0 sacks of their own and 11.0 TFL and allowed only a 4th quarter TD. West Alabama is at home vs North American University.

#5/#6 Valdosta State 51 Virginia Union 7

Blazers QB Ivory Durham went 16-31 175 2 TD 1 INT 4 carries 112 2 TD leading an offense that scored at least one TD in each quarter. Seth McGill added 129 yards rushing and 1 TD. The defense forced 3 turnovers (2 fumbles 1 INT) and 7 punts, and didn’t allow a score until early in the 4th quarter. Virginia Union was lead by RB Jada Byers who had 21 for 107 and 1 TD. Next week VSU hosts Albany State (2-0)
